Honoring the Memory of Ovaltine
For those of you who wanted to preserve the smokestack, I sympathize and I apologize for voting against your wishes. I know that the Ovaltine factory and the community formed by that factory are among the most cherished memories of longtime Villa Parkers, I know that the smokestack has been a wonderful keepsake for those cherished memories.
Having said all that, I believe that there are better ways to honor the memory of Ovaltine than to preserve this particular historical treasure.
The TIF money that was proposed to be used to fund the repairs could go a long way toward stimulating development in the neighborhood surrounding Ovaltine. (See redevelopment page for info on proposed new TIF.) I think the money does greater service to the memory of Ovaltine by helping to keep the neighborhood vibrant.
Also, your village board recently voted to install, and staff have recently isntalled, air conditioning in the historical museum. Much less costly than the smokestack, this air conditioning will help to preserve many historical treasures, and many of those related to ovaltine, for future generations.
